Next generation Mobile Networks & Mobile Internet - what is different and who needs it? (K.-D. Kohrt) Just like the fixed network community, the mobile industry is developing concepts and implementations for Next Generation (Mobile) Networks. While there are many similarities, in particular in the core network architecture and the service delivery framework using IMS, a lot of debate is taking place around the role of mobility and different (wireless) access options. The evolution of existing cellular (CDMA-) technologies and various new contenders based on OFDMA are pushing the capabilities of wireless access even beyond typical DSL-performance. Another area for discussion centers around service models in an environment of ubiquitous broadband access. Will there be a role for a different flavour of mobile internet, or will walled gardens and service bundles give way to fully open internet communication? This presentation will provide a status summary of related work in network architecture, radio access evolution and attempt an answer on whether mobile / wireless will become just another bitpipe to universal content and applications.
