Amateur Radio – Another Success in the Winter Semester 2024/2025
02/26/2025The "Amateur Radio" lecture, once again offered by Prof. Dr. Matthias Jung, leader of the Computer Engineering group (CE) at the Department of Computer Science XVII at the University of Würzburg (JMU) during the Winter Semester 2024/25, demonstrates that interest in amateur radio remains strong.
Around 30 students successfully passed the examination of the Federal Network Agency BNetzA in Würzburg on February 25, 2025, and can now officially call themselves Class E radio amateurs. This continues the success of the previous year, in which a total of 60 new radio amateurs were trained. Each participant can now apply for a globally unique call sign from the authority.
For the first time, the lecture was also available on YouTube, giving interested individuals outside the university the opportunity to engage with the subject as well (YouTube link).
"For the students, successfully passing the amateur radio exam represents an additional qualification alongside their studies, which they can use for future projects at JMU, for example, in the satellite sector," emphasized Professor Jung. The amateur radio service is particularly interesting for students in the Aerospace Informatics program, as communication with the university's satellites is only possible through amateur radio.
After the exam, the success was celebrated with a casual get-together, pizza, and some on-air radio operations. The event was supported by VDE Bayern, of which Professor Jung is the liaison lecturer at JMU, as well as by the DARC local chapter Würzburg North B17. Since 2024, the VDE and DARC have been working more closely together, with the shared goal of promoting STEM education and supporting young talent.
The next amateur radio lecture for the Winter Semester 2025/26 is already being planned. Students from all fields are invited to participate as part of the General Key Qualifications (ASQ) program.
