Presentation @ BuildSys 2024
20.11.2024Our colleague Jonas Schiller presented our paper entitled “Evaluating Water-Energy Nexus related Water Saving Potentials of Residential Households with Solar PV and Electric Storage“ at the 11th International Conference on Systems for Energy-Efficient Buildings, Cities, and Transportation (BuildSys 2024) in Hangzhou, China.
The paper investigates the residential water consumption induced by electricity generation. The electricity generation sector, especially thermoelectric generators, is one of the largest water consumer in Europe and the specific water consumption of the electricity mix, similar to carbon emissions, can be calculated on an hourly level. In our study we used smart meter datasets of several thousand households in Germany and Spain to obtain their yearly electricity-induced water consumption. Additionally we simulated the effects of integrating PV-Systems and Battery Electric Storage and a potential optimization for reduced water consumption.
Our findings show that the average German household consumes over 80 liters of water per day and that using an integrated PV and Battery System can lead to average savings of about 25%.
