ModSim at the DACH+ Energy Informatics Conference 2026 in Linz

06.10.2026

Our research group ModSim was proudly represented at the 15th DACH+ Conference on Energy Informatics in Linz, Austria. Our colleagues Daniel Bayer and Paul Benz each presented their latest research on sustainable and intelligent energy systems, contributing two full papers to this year's proceedings.

In his presentation, Daniel Bayer introduced a multi-service digital twin architecture designed for urban energy systems. His work tackles the challenge of unused residential battery storage capacity during winter by coupling a real-time, short-horizon control service with a long-horizon city-scale simulation. Evaluated on a 2045 net-zero scenario for a German city, the proposed framework enables decentralized battery storage systems to absorb city-level renewable surpluses—unlocking up to 1.98 GWh of local clean energy annually and decreasing dependence on upper-level grid electricity imports by around 6%.

Paul Benz presented an innovative, lightweight rule-based model capturing price-sensitive charging decisions of electric vehicle drivers in large-scale agent-based simulations. While traditional charging optimization methods are often computationally prohibitive for large metropolitan areas, Paul's approach achieves high interpretability and slashes simulation runtimes by 97% compared to full optimization. Validated against real-world metropolitan commuting patterns, the method yields charging costs within 4% to 8% of an optimal full-foresight benchmark, making it an ideal tool for scalable transport electrification and infrastructure planning.
