Students' Software Project: Support Tool for Building Energy Retrofit Decisions

11.09.2025

A student team has developed a novel app that supports homeowners to quickly and easily evaluate possible energy-savings achievable by renovation decissions for their buildings.

The app allows users to describe the current state of a residential building and then simulate potential retrofit measures. Based on this, it calculates the expected energy savings of different renovation options.

A particular focus of the project was not only the development of the frontend and backend but also the implementation of an innovative calibration methodology. This new approach, based on gradient descent optimization, makes it possible to estimate unknown building parameters from available consumption data.

The project was supervised by Prof. Dr. Frank Puppe, Prof. Dr.-Ing. Marco Pruckner, Dr. Kirill Djebko, and Daniel Bayer. The main work was carried out by students Felix Bartunek, Jan Esperer, Marco Goodwin and Niklas Vogt.
