  During the last years so-called 'Thin Client' architectures have become very popular. Thin Clients are simple end user devices, which are provided with content and services by powerful servers. Originally this concept was developed for Local Area Networks (LANs), which provide a high Quality of Service. If they are used in Wide Area Networks (WANs) they need to be adjusted accordingly in order to guarantee a good Quality of Experience (QoE). In this paper we investigate possibilities for configuring Citrix based Thin Client architectures to improve the QoE in WAN environments. We consider the benefits on the QoE as well as the costs on network layer.

  In the future Internet, multi-network services will follow a new paradigm in which the intelligence of the network control is gradually moved to the edge of the network. This impacts both the objective Quality of Service (QoS) of the end-toend connection as well as the subjective Quality of Experience (QoE) as perceived by the end user. Skype already offers such a multi-network Voice-over-IP (VoIP) telephony service today. Due to its ease of use and a high sound quality, it becomes increasingly popular in the wired Internet. UMTS operators promise to offer large data rates which should suffice to support VoIP calls in a mobile environment. However, the success of those applications strongly depends on the corresponding QoE. In this work, we analyze the theoretically achievable as well as the actually achieved quality of IP-based voice calls using Skype. This is done performing measurements in both a real UMTS network and a testbed environment. The latter is used to emulate rate control mechanisms and changing system conditions of UMTS networks. The results show in how far Skype over UMTS is able to keep pace with existing mobile telephony systems and how it reacts to different network characteristics. The investigated performance measures comprise the QoE in terms of the MOS value and the QoS in terms of network-based factors like throughput, packet interarrival times, or packet loss.

In this paper we therefore take a step forward in this direction using the example of thin client architectures, where the client is only used as a dumb terminal while the applications run on a central server. The satisfaction of a thin client user is thus heavily influenced by the quality of the network connection between the client and the server. We study this influence by varying different network parameters like packet loss, jitter, and delay in a controlled testbed environment. The service quality is assessed using objective measurements on application level (oQoE) and verified by means of a survey among test persons capturing subjective user satisfactions (sQoE).

Discrete event simulation is often applied to quantitatively and qualitatively evaluate the performance and scalability of such systems before they are deployed. However, the number of users, processes and events which can be simulated is limited by both the central memory and the time available. In this paper we present compact data structures and event design algorithms, which are intended to be a further step towards efficient simulation of large scale p2p systems. In particular, we give guidelines on how to increase the number of peers which can be simulated and show how to find a good tradeoff between computational time and memory consumption in large scale p2p simulation.

  The ongoing process of globalization leads to a huge demand for highly scalable applications that are able to deal with millions of participants distributed all over the world. Peer-to-Peer (p2p) technology enables an arbitrary large number of users to participate in distributed services like content distribution or collaboration tools. In order to verify a new protocol’s performance and scalability simulation is a commonly used tool. First, predicting the network and peer behavior in the real world is only feasible if the simulation, i.e. all applied models as well as the peer state, is as realistic as possible. Second, many properties of the system only become observable when the number of participants is sufficiently large. Therefore, verifying the scalability of a system requires simulating huge worldwide networks. Due to limited processing power, central memory and availabe time, both requirements can only be fullfilled if the applied models are very efficient. In this paper we take a closer look at the network layer. We compare the most commonly-used network models and present a very efficient model for applying real-world network transmission times in large scale simulations.

Peer-to-Peer (p2p) technology enables an arbitrary large number of users to participate in distributed services like content distribution or collaboration tools. In order to verify a new protocol’s performance and scalability simulation is a commonly used tool. First, predicting the network and peer behavior in the real world is only feasible if the simulation, i.e. all applied models as well as the peer state, is as realistic as possible. Second, many properties of the system only become observable when the number of participants is sufficiently large. Therefore, verifying the scalability of a system requires simulating huge worldwide networks. Due to limited processing power, central memory and availabe time, both requirements can only be fullfilled if the applied models are very efficient. In this paper we take a closer look at the network layer. Thereby, the BitTorrent protocol is widely used in the Internet today. Most research work studies the protocol analytically, by simulations at the flow-level or real world experiments. Thereby, for flow-level simulations the influence of neglecting packet-level characteristics is not yet quantified. Therefore, this paper compares packetlevel simulation results with flow-level values and analytically derived bounds. Our findings show that BitTorrent is near to optimal at flow-level for different scenarios. Naturally, packet-level results deviate more from the optimal values but differences are at most around 30% in our simulations. Furthermore, we show that the propagation delay can significantly influence the download performance of BitTorrent.

In this paper we therefore characterize the traffic generated by different types of thin client users when working with popular office applications like Microsoft Word, Excel, or PowerPoint. We analyze the traffic patterns measured in our testbed environment and thus provide a basis for subsequent research studies as well as for administrators to estimate the amount and the characteristics of user generated traffic.

  The basic idea behind thin-client architectures is to run applications on a central server instead of installing them separately on each client. The Windows Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) and the Citrix Presentation Server are two well known approaches to separate the location of where the user input is processed from the computer he is actually working on. While both alternatives solve the same problem, they rely on significantly different mechanisms to handle the exchange of user input and screen updates between client and server. In this paper we therefore compare the performance of both protocols under different aspects. In particular, we study the load caused on network layer as well as the satisfaction of the end user with the service quality achieved by the different terminal services. As this performance heavily depends on the current network conditions, we emulate realistic scenarios in a controlled testbed environment and measure the time required for typical office tasks on application layer. As a result, we quantify the Quality-of-Experience (QoE) perceived by the end-user, compare the overhead required by the different available protocols, and unveil their advantages and disadvantages. Our results can be used to decide which protocol to use in which scenario.

  Alle vier Jahre fiebern Fußballfans rund um den Globus der Weltmeisterschaft in ihrem Lieblingssport entgegen. Nachdem das Großereignis dieses Jahr im eigenen Land stattfindet, ist die Vorfreude hierzulande natürlich besonders groß. Selbstverständlich lässt das Spektakel auch den Informatiker nicht unberührt. Kein Wunder, handelt es sich doch um den perfekten Sport für einen Naturwissenschaftler. Man kann sich auf die Couch vor ein technisches Gerät setzen und anderen Menschen zusehen, wie sich diese physisch verausgaben. Das Beste dabei, man braucht noch nicht einmal raus an die frische Luft. Nun sind aber gerade die letzten Monate vor dem Anpfiff des Eröffnungsspiels vor Spannung kaum zu ertragen. Doch zum Glück hatte die Firma Panini vor vielen Jahren die glorreiche Idee, das Konterfei der großen Fußballstars auf Sticker zu drucken und nebst Sammelalben zu verkaufen. Solche Sammelalben gibt es mittlerweile für fast alles was das Kinderherz begehrt, aber eben auch für erwachsene Themen wie die Fußballweltmeisterschaft 2006. Auch unser Informatiker beschließt, sich ein solches Album zuzulegen und bis zum Beginn der Weltmeisterschaft mit seinen sportlichen Idolen aufzufüllen...

  Voice-over-IP (VoIP) telephony becomes more and more popular in the wired Internet because of easy-to-use applications with high sound quality like Skype. UMTS operators promise to offer large data rates which should also make VoIP possible in a mobile environment. However, the success of those applications strongly depends on the user perceived voice quality. In this paper, we therefore analyze the achievable and the actual quality of IP-based telephony calls using Skype. This is done performing measurements in both a real UMTS network and a test environment. The latter is used to emulate rate control mechanisms and changing system conditions of UMTS networks. The results show whether Skype over UMTS is able to keep pace with existing mobile telephony systems and how it reacts to different network characteristics. The investigated performance measures comprise the Perceptual Evaluation of Speech Quality (PESQ) to evaluate the voice quality, the packet loss, the inter-packet delay, and the throughput to capture networkbased factors. In this context, the concept of the Network Utility Function (NUF) is applied to describe the impact of the network on the voice quality as perceived by the end-user.

  Peer-to-Peer (P2P) networks offer a great potential that goes well beyond simple file-sharing. We present a novel approach for using P2P-overlay networks to ensure a sustainable operation of a distributed system. In particular, we show how to detect and localize the causes of physical link failures using the maintenance traffic of a P2P overlay network. The network monitoring architecture can be set up autonomously thereby reducing both the installation costs and the traffic overhead.
