  YouTube is the most important online platform for streaming video clips. The popularity and the continuously increasing number of users pose new challenges for Internet Service Providers (ISPs). In particular, in access networks where the transmission resources are limited and the providers are interested in reducing their operational expenditure, it is worth to efficiently optimize the network for popular services such as YouTube. In this paper, we propose different resource management mechanisms to improve the Quality of Experience (QoE) of YouTube users. In particular, we investigate the benefit of cross-layer resource management actions at the client and in the access network for YouTube video streaming. The proposed algorithms are evaluated in a wireless mesh testbed. The results show how to improve the YouTube QoE for the users with the help of client-based or network-based control actions.

Although OpenFlow was initially only used in the research domain, the concept is now finding its way into data centers due to the relatively cheap hardware and high flexibility. In this paper, we take a look at the scalability and usability of OpenFlow in data centers. Based on data center traffic models and OpenFlow measurements, we evaluate whether OpenFlow is able to cope with the short flow inter-arrival times in data centers by means of simulation.

  More and more services are provided by large data centers with a potentially very large number of physical or virtual hosts. As the number of hosted services and service consumers increases, also the number of hosts inside a data center raises to cope with the increasing end-user demand. Current data center networks are usually based on Ethernet and mechanisms like load balancing or redundancy between data centers require a transparent connection of these Ethernet networks over a Wide Area Network (WAN). Due to the large number of hosts, these interconnected data center networks face scalability problems on different protocol layers. One such issue, which is currently discussed within the IETF, is the scalability of the link layer Address Resolution Protocol (ARP). This paper studies the control traffic caused by address resolution for interconnected data centers. We develop an analytical model for the ARP traffic between data center locations that takes into account the number of hosts and connected sites. This model can then be used to quantify the ARP traffic for a data center interconnect solution. As an example, we apply our model to Virtual Private LAN Services (VPLS). In addition, we study how an ARP proxy can improve the overall scalability, and we show that a proxy significantly reduces the ARP traffic at VPLS switches.

Our application classification reveals a trend back to HTTP traffic, underlines the immense usage of flash videos, and unveils a participant of a Botnet. In addition, flow and user statistics are presented, which resulting traffic models can be used for simulation and emulation of access networks.

Designed for supporting the expected peak traffic load, the goal of the data center provider such as Amazon or Google is now to dynamically adapt the number of offered resources according to the current traffic load. In this paper, we present a queuing theoretical model to evaluate the trade-off between waiting time and power consumption if only a subset of servers is active all the time and the remaining servers are enabled on demand. We develop a queuing model with thresholds to turn-on reserve servers when needed. Furthermore, the resulting system behavior under varying parameters and requirements for Pareto optimality are studied.

In this paper, we present a queuing theoretical model to evaluate the trade-off between waiting time and power consumption if only a subset of servers is active all the time and the remaining servers are enabled on demand. We develop a queuing model with thresholds to turn-on reserve servers when needed. Furthermore, the resulting system behavior under varying parameters and requirements for Pareto optimality are studied.

The limited bandwidth and the fact that access network are most often used as mere bit pipes are however unfavorable for the users’ quality of experience (QoE). The lack of application-specific service guarantees is especially inadequate in the face of an increasing degree of heterogeneity of Internet applications and their individual service requirements. Application and quality of experience resource management, Aquarema for short, addresses this challenge by enabling application specific network resource management and thereby improves the user QoE. This is achieved by the interaction of application comfort (AC) monitoring tools, running at the clients, and a network advisor which may trigger different resource management tools. AC quantifies how well an application is running and in particular, enables a prediction of the user experience, thereby allowing the network advisor to act upon an imminent QoE degradation. We demonstrate the appeal of Aquarema at the example of YouTube video streaming in a congested IEEE 802.11 based mesh testbed where AC-aware traffic shaping guarantees the successful video playback.

While initially used solely in the research domain, OpenFlow is now finding its way into commercial applications. However, this creates new challenges, as questions of OpenFlow scalability and performance have not yet been answered. This paper is a first step towards that goal. Based on measurements of switching times of current OpenFlow hardware, we derive a basic model for the forwarding speed and blocking probability of an OpenFlow switch combined with an OpenFlow controller and validate it using a simulation. This model can be used to estimate the packet sojourn time and the probability of lost packets in such a system and can give hints to developers and researchers on questions how an OpenFlow architecture will perform given certain parameters.

  The high power consumption of data centers confronts the providers with major challenges. However, not only the servers and the cooling consume a huge amount of energy, but also the data center network architecture makes an important contribution. In this paper, we introduce different data center architectures and compare them regarding their power consumption. The results show that there are some differences which should not be neglected and that with only minor modifications of the architecture, it is possible to save a huge amount of energy.

A popular example is the migration of virtual machines between different sites of a geographically dispersed service provider. In this paper, we propose a subscription model for time-scheduled data transfers. Transmission requests are served consecutively, giving the flows access to the physical bandwidth. This is in contrast to today's Internet where flows are served in parallel so that they compete for the available bandwidth. We present the architecture to enable such data beams. Furthermore, we model and analyze the performance under different conditions and compare it with concurrent transmission.

  The energy consumption of wireless network equipment is responsible for the largest amount of the OPEX of today’s wireless network providers. Thus, an energy-efficient network is not only a matter of being ”green” but also helps to reduce the OPEX. In this paper, we show how to enhance planning and optimization tools for cellular networks as well as for wireless mesh networks to include the energy consumption in the planning process. We adapt standard genetic operators and evaluate the influence of the operators on the performance. The results show that GAs are well-suited for planning WMNs.

However, the traffic characteristics of business and home users differ significantly. Therefore, we have performed measurements of home users at a broadband wireless access service provider in order to reflect only home user traffic characteristics. In this paper, we present the results of these measurements, showing daily traffic fluctuations, flow statistics as well as application distributions. The results show a difference to backbone traffic characteristics. Furthermore, we observed a shift from web and Peer-to-Peer (P2P) file sharing traffic to streaming applications.

In an earlier study, we showed that this effect is suitable for increasing the max-min fair share throughput in a WMN operating with a TDMA channel access scheme. In this work, we investigate if the use of smaller link rates is also suitable for increasing the throughput of a WMN using a contention-based channel access mechanism. For this purpose, we analytically derive a guideline for link rate assignment as protection against hidden nodes and compute the costs and benefits of this mechanism in terms of MAC layer efficiency. A simulation study shows however that in a medium sized WMN this strategy is less advantageous than assumed and allows to give advices for practical mesh network deployments.

Techniques for quantifying the instantaneous YouTube QoE and predicting an imminent QoE degradation have in contrast never been proposed. The latter task is even more important if network management actions shall be carried out to avoid a YouTube QoE degradation. In this work we describe YoMo, a tool which constantly monitors the YouTube application comfort. This measure quantifies the application operation condition and allows a QoE prediction. Experiments show that YoMo is able to exactly anticipate an upcoming YouTube QoE degradation.

As congestion is a major problem in wireless mesh networks, IEEE 802.11s addresses this problem by introducing the intra-mesh congestion control. In order to explore the potential of this mechanism, we describe two different IEEE 802.11s compliant congestion control mechanisms and discuss their respective benefits and limitations. Results from a simulative evaluation demonstrate that intra-mesh congestion control is suitable for avoiding the loss of packets which have already been forwarded over the air interface and, if appropriately implemented, increases the overall network throughput. The results do however also point out the limitations of the proposed IEEE 802.11s congestion notification format.

Results from a simulative evaluation demonstrate that intra-mesh congestion control is suitable for avoiding the loss of packets which have already been forwarded over the air interface and, if appropriately implemented, increases the overall network throughput. The results do however also point out the limitations of the proposed IEEE 802.11s congestion notification format.

In this paper, we provide a detailed analysis of the Skype SILK codec and compare it with the iLBC and GSM codec. The results show that the SILK codec is superior to the other codecs in scenarios with random and bulk packet loss. This increased tolerance of packet loss enables the option of QoE Monitoring under reasonable network conditions. From analysis, we derive an estimation, which can be used to monitor the MOS value of the users in the worst case. Furthermore, we show how sampling can effectively decrease the required measurement effort. As a result of this unplanned evolution, we currently witness scalability problems, increased complexity, missing modularity as well as missing flexibility for emerging services. In this report we focus on two selected issues: i) the changing routing paradigm and ii) edge‐based intelligence. As a consequence, they require support for Quality of Service or advanced mechanisms for selecting Internet gateways. One important required information is the one-way delay between different nodes. In this paper, we have developed, implemented, and evaluated an one-way delay estimation technique for wireless mesh networks which is based on estimating intra node queuing and inter node forwarding delay. An IP-header option field is used to accumulate the per hop delay estimate to provide an end-to-end estimate. We also outline problems with the implementation and compare results with real one-way delays obtained from a 14 node mesh testbed. As a consequence, they require support for Quality of Service or advanced mechanisms for selecting Internet gateways. One important required information is the one-way delay between different nodes. In this paper, we have developed, implemented, and evaluated an one-way delay estimation technique for wireless mesh networks which is based on estimating intra node queuing and inter node forwarding delay. An IP-header option field is used to accumulate the per hop delay estimate to provide an end-to-end estimate. We also outline problems with the implementation and compare results with real one-way delays obtained from a 14 node mesh testbed. We show how estimation accuracy depends on network load and provide insights into further improvements.

They offer more flexibility compared to traditional networks but on the expense of a complex structure. Thus, planning and optimization of WMNs is a challenge. In this paper we focus on routing and channel assignment in WMNs for throughput maximization using genetic algorithms. Genetic algorithms provide a good solution for large-scale WMNs in relatively small computation time. The results prove the effectiveness of the genetic operators and show the advantages of a genetic optimization. However, these operators have to be configured carefully to avoid local optima. We will show the influence of the selection principles as well as evaluation functions on the optimization.

  Wireless mesh networks (WMNs) support a variety of modulation and coding schemes (MCSs) and hence enable adaptive modulation and coding. On the one hand, adaptive modulation and coding significantly increases the overall system capacity, as it allows to maximize the throughput on each link in dependence of the channel conditions. On the other hand, there is a trade-off between link data rate and spatial reuse, as high data rate links are less robust against interference. For maximizing the wireless mesh network performance, an intelligent link rate assignment strategy is thus required. By evaluating the maxmin fair WMN throughput under different link rate assignment strategies, we are able to show that using more robust MCSs improve the overall WMN throughput and point out directions towards an optimized MCS choice.

This denotes a clearly unfair channel access which is important to be aware of, e.g., when collision probabilities are measured and used for reactive control of contention windows. We model the unfair channel access phenomenon analytically and semi-analytically for bidirectional constant bit rate and unidirectional TCP traffic and compare the results with those from simulations.

The increasing number of wireless Internet users and the changing application demands require consecutive traffic measurements. Therefore, we have performed measurements of home users at a broadband wireless access service provider in order to reflect the current traffic characteristics. In this paper, we present the results of these measurements like application distributions as well as changing traffic characteristics caused by user demands and new services. The results are used by a network service provider to optimize its network performance in order to give Quality of Service (QoS) guarantees for home users in its fixed wireless network.

This causes reduced access to the medium for low priority traffic and under some conditions even leads to starvation. To compensate the throughput reduction of low priority traffic, we propose frame bursting in this paper. That means low priority traffic is sent infrequently, but many frames may be sent in a burst. Our simulation results show that the throughput of the low priority best effort traffic class can be significantly increased without disrupting high priority traffic.

In this paper, we present a dynamic bandwidth control mechanism which measures the current situation in the network and adapts the bandwidth in order to ensure a high QoE level. The mechanism is implemented in a Wireless LAN mesh testbed and the results show that real-time applications are successfully protected from disturbing best effort traffic flows.

However, in rural and suburban areas, it is often too expensive for network providers to serve every user with traditional wired broadband access such as DSL or cable modem. In such areas, WiMAX (worldwide interoperability for microwave access) networks based on the IEEE 802.16 standard are the most promising solution. In this paper, we focus on the performance of the IEEE 802.16 time division duplex (TDD) mode in rural areas with only one cell. When using TDD, the duration of the downlink and uplink subframe can be set individually, which is called adaptive time division duplex (ATDD). However, the ratio between downlink and uplink is normally set to a fixed value. We will show the performance of different fixed downlink/uplink ratios for several traffic models. Furthermore, we propose an algorithm for an adaptive downlink/uplink boundary in dependence on the current traffic load in the cell. The results show an enormous performance gain compared to the fixed settings.

In this paper, we will study the performance of two different bandwidth request mechanisms, namely piggyback and broadcast requests and will show in which situations piggybacking performs better than the contention based broadcast bandwidth requests.

  The Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) is the most popular standard for mobile phones in the world with about 1.57 billion customers. The Short Message Service (SMS) in GSM allows amongst others the transmission of short text messages to mobile phones. In case of an emergency, the SMS can be used to warn a large number of individuals. However, the short message delivery is performed on best-effort basis and no quality of service (QoS) agreement is given, i.e., there is no guarantee how long it takes a message to reach the recipient or that the message will be successfully delivered. In this paper, we investigate the message loss probability and the transmission time by performing measurements with different scenarios in a public GSM network. Then, we identify problems according to the requirements for an emergency warning system. We present a solution based on the cell broadcast in GSM and show numerical results regarding the delay and the capacity of the SMS.

  Peer-to-Peer (P2P) applications have become highly popular in today’s Internet due to the spread of file sharing platforms such as KaZaa, eDonkey, and BitTorrent. In this paper we investigate the diffusion behavior of a file shared by multiple sources in an eDonkey-like peer-to-peer (P2P) environment. We provide two simulation models, one which captures the chunk transfer in a detailed way and a simplified model, where the upload bandwidth is equally split among all chunks of the file. The simulation of a single chunk transmission is sufficient to obtain accurate results, which leads to a much shorter simulation time. We further investigate the non-stationary process of file diffusion in a statistically reliable way. Depending on the popularity of the file, we consider flash crowd arrivals and constant arrivals. We derive simple analytical expressions showing the relationship between the propagation of the file, i.e. the number of peers sharing the chunk, and the main influencing factors: e.g. sharing probability, access probability, or arrival rate.
