Improving Deutsche Bahn with Prolog

12/20/2016

Falco Nogatz and Christian Hieke (insertEFFECT GmbH Nürnberg) took part in the Open Data Hackathon of Deutsche Bahn in Berlin. Their project "Preisvorsprung", an improved version of the travel information, won the major price.

At the last weekend before Christmas, the German Railway Company, Deutsche Bahn, hosted a Hackathon in Berlin. Falco Nogatz, member of our chair's project group for knowledge-based systems, took part in. After his success in the very first DB Hackathon nearly two years before, he also won the public choice award in 2016.

Together with Christian Hieke of the insertEFFECT GmbH Nürnberg they developed a browser extension within just 24 hours, which takes the prices of Deutsche Bahn's travel information and pushes them to a central server. Based on these connections, best prices are calculated using Prolog, especially with regard to ticket splitting. The team which just met in Berlin presented discounts of upto 60 percent, which might be interesting both for customers and the internal analysis of Deutsche Bahn.

A short description of the project can be found in the Hackdash of the DB Open Data Hackathon. The next chance to meet again is in February: the award winners have been invited to the Future Mobility Days in Nürnberg.
