The sales magazine "bulletin" of Credit Suisse reports on research results of Alexander Wolff and Martin Nöllenburg.

11/01/2009

The magazine focuses its 4/2009 issue on the topic "structure" and discusses the problem of drawing subway maps. The author of the article, Stefanie Schramm, describes the contribution of Alexander Wolff and his former PhD student Martin Nöllenburg (KIT).

At the conference Graph Drawing 2005, the two presented an approach for drawing subway maps based on linear programming, a global optimization method. Their approach cannot and does not intend to replace graphic designers, but graphic designers could use it as a preprocessing step. Alexander Wolff has published a survey paper (open access) on several methods for drawing subway maps.

The issue of the "bulletin" is available both as a high-quality printed version, which can be ordered online for free, and as a free pdf document.
