30,000 euros for AI in the regional economy

12.05.2022

The President of the Würzburg-Schweinfurt Chamber of Industry and Commerce, Dr. Klaus D. Mapara, presented the 30,000-euro University Sponsorship Award of the Main-Franconian economy to Professor Dr. Andreas Nüchter from the Chair of Robotics at the University of Würzburg. The money will go towards the further development of artificial intelligence (AI) in the Main-Franconian economy.

Professor Nüchter's team is working on the acquisition of 3D surface profiles. Artificial intelligence methods calculate the geometries of surfaces from serial images. This system is supposed to learn from examples and can generalize them after the learning phase is over. After that, the software can evaluate 3D surface profiles of new objects. Professor Nüchter emphasized during the presentation that haptics is one of the most important sources of information. Accordingly, he said, capturing and characterizing the surface properties of materials is crucial to the success of products.
