Supporting Student Success with Data

Abstract

Educational institutions have been increasingly moving to online learning environments where learners can access educational material, submit assignments, or contact academic and support staff at any time and from anywhere. Consequently, due to the reduced learner-instructor interaction, students need to take more responsibility for their own learning. At the intersection of data science and learning sciences, learning analytics offers methods to address this challenge. By analysing data traces students leave in the digital world we can gain insights into learner behavior and the efficacy of instructional methods. Learning analytics can be used to identify patterns and trends within educational data to improve course design, enhance student performance, identify at-risk students, personalise learning experiences, and provide actionable feedback for both learners and educators.

In this talk, I will explore current challenges and highlight research directions in the fields of learning analytics. Key topics include the design and personalisation of feedback tools for learners, the design of teacher-facing learning analytics, integration of cultural awareness into these systems, and tackling the challenges of large-scale adoption.
