Robots and automation systems have to be increasingly flexible in order to adapt to their environment and have to bring in cognitive functions, so as to generate optimum results by means of autonomous reaction capabilities. Hence it is necessary to explore the interdisciplinary foundations including biology and medicine in order to realize intelligent responsive technology systems with a combination of approaches from advanced sensor technology, control engineering and computer science. At the Adaptive Robotics Center, such interdisciplinary research approaches are being studied systematically in order to develop innovative solutions that will form the basis for future robots.

Challenging tasks for a wide range of robotics application areas (from space travel and medical missions to industrial production) are studied, including cooperation between man and machine. This also brings to fore intuitive, interactive human-machine interfaces and this involves technical and scientific questions from psychology, sociology, teaching and law.
