Tele-Dialysis

Autonomy Support to Dialysis Patients through Telematics

Telemedicine, the use of an electronic communication network for the transmission of data and information concerning diagnosis or medical treatments to improve a patient's health is a rapidly emerging technology of clinical medicine. It ensures better quality of health care treatment with considerable reduction in the treatment costs. The Chair for Robotics and Telematics plans to develop a patient-friendly solution with partners in hospitals, industries and research to optimally support chronically ill dialysis patients to take personal initiative and stay self-determined and thereby increasing the autonomy of the patient.

The link-up of the patient with a system (e.g. dialysis equipment with additional sensors) and linking the system with the physician (as shown in the picture) shall be ensured by telematic means which on one hand through improved monitoring and the associated security encourages the patient and on the other hand keeps the consulting physician available with more information of the course of disease.
The technical innovation lies on the novel interactivity in the treatment. Also through iterations of modification and observation, an adaptive approach is possible. Last but not least, by telematics support the patient competence is raised which is manifested by an increased sense of security. The knowledge that the patient can quickly receive assistance in case of emergency enhances the autonomy and mobility of the patient in his familiar environment.
