Welcome to the Institute of Computer Science
06/01/2024We warmly welcome Prof. Dr.-Ing. Katharina Breininger to the Chair of Pattern Recognition at the Institute of Computer Science and the Center for Artificial Intelligence and Data Science (CAIDAS).
Katharina is a computer scientist by training, trying to better understand and develop robust and generalizable machine learning approaches in different interdisciplinary domains, with a focus on medicine and medical imaging. Her research covers general aspects of machine learning, including representation learning, generalization under domain shifts, and labeling strategies including human factors. Additionally, she is highly interested in applying these insights in the context of (bio)medical research, for instance, in intraoperative and multimodal imaging as well as machine learning for microscopy.
She studied computer science in Marburg and Erlangen and completed her PhD on image fusion during minimally invasive interventions with Andreas Maier and Siemens Healthineers in 2020. Before joining the University of Würzburg, Katharina was assistant professor at Friedrich-Alexander-University Erlangen-Nürnberg, leading the "Artificial Intelligence in Medical Imaging" group.
