Part-time study

The Bachelor's degree in Computer Science and the Master's degree in Computer Science can also be studied part-time. The following conditions apply:

• The standard period of study, and thus also the maximum duration of study, is doubled
• The deadlines for the GOP/KOP are doubled
• The completion time for the Bachelor's or Master's thesis is doubled
• A maximum of 20 ECTS credits may be earned in one semester. However, if more than 20 ECTS credits are earned in a part-time semester, that semester will be counted as two part-time semesters.
• The switch can be requested up to four weeks after the start of the lecture period in a semester at the latest
• The switch is possible in the penultimate semester of the standard period of study at the latest
• In WueStudy, a part-time semester is displayed as 0.5 full-time semesters
• Adapted suggested course schedules are available on the Web pages of the respective degree programme
• No additional course dates or attendance requirements can be provided for part-time students. For example, there are no additional lecture dates at off-peak times.
• There are block courses with integrated examinations which must also be completed within the same timeframe by part-time students. This applies in particular to the programming practical, in which programming tasks must be completed as home assignments over a six-week period, followed by an in-person exam.

The exact rules can be found in the ASPO, Appendix 4. It should be noted that part-time study can also result in disadvantages outside the university. You may no longer be entitled to BAFöG or co-insurance for health insurance. The possibility of studying part-time may also be restricted when studying on a student visa.
We therefore strongly advise you to carefully consider whether a switch to part-time study makes sense in your own situation. In many cases, there are means that are better suited to the situation, e.g. a leave of absence or disadvantage compensation.
