Khalil is an aerospace engineer by training whose research encompasses formation flight, rendezvous and docking, proximity operations, and space situational awareness. His work focuses on using advanced models, components, and algorithms to push the boundaries of guidance, navigation, and control of distributed space systems. Typical application scenarios of his research include active debris removal, on-orbit servicing, assembly, and manufacturing.

Khalil studied aerospace engineering at the University of Stuttgart and earned his Doctor of Engineering (Dr.-Ing.) from the Technische Universität Braunschweig, where his thesis focused on guidance, control, and docking for CubeSat-based active debris removal. Before joining the University of Würzburg, he led the SmallSat Rendezvous & Robotics Group at the Technische Universität Berlin and held research positions at the Technische Universität Braunschweig, the German Aerospace Center (DLR), and Airbus Defence and Space.
