Thesis
The thesis is the last major examination in the degree programme. This written scientific work is intended to demonstrate that you are able to work on a research problem in depth within a specified period of time.
Choice of topic
Topics for final theses are offered by all chairs of the Institute of Computer Science. Currently available topics are advertised on the websites of the chairs, and contact persons responsible for theses are named. Potential supervisors are all lecturers at the Institute of Computer Science.
Registration
Before registering for a thesis, students must have earned a certain number of ECTS credits. These are:
- In the Bachelor's degree programmes in Computer Science, Computer Science and Sustainability, Aerospace Computer Science, AI & Data Science: at least 85 ECTS (except from ASQ)
- In the Bachelor's degree programmes in Games Engineering and HCI: no restriction
- In the Master's degree programmes in Satellite Technology, Aerospace Computer Science, AI & XR, and Artificial Intelligence: at least 75 ECTS
- In the Master's degree programme in Computer Science: no restriction
Registration is carried out by the supervisors. For a Bachelor's thesis, one examiner is required, who must be from the Institute of Computer Science (Bachelor HCI: Institute of Human-Computer-Media). For a Master's thesis, two examiners must be named, at least one of whom must be from the Institute of Computer Science.
The registration must be submitted to the examination committee using the appropriate form for the study programme.
Completion time
- Bachelor: 10 weeks
- Bachelor Games Engineering, Bachelor Human-Computer Interaction and Bachelor Aerospace Computer Science old examination regulations: 12 weeks
- Master: 6 months
The completing time starts on the date stated on the registration form. The exact submission date can be found in WueStudy.
Submission
The thesis can be written in either German or English as agreed with the supervisor. The submission is either "digital" on USB sticks (Bachelor 1, Master 2) plus a printed and signed assurance of independent work (programme-specific from the Examination Office) or with (Bachelor 2, Master 3) printed and bound (no ring binding!) copies, which must include the assurance of independent work.
The thesis must be submitted to the Examinations Office in Building 55 at Hubland Nord by the deadline.
Extension
The examination committee decides on extensions for reasons for which the candidate is not responsible. Programme-specific forms for applying for an extension can be found at the examinations fffice. Normally, an extension should first be discussed with the supervisor, especially if it is for technical reasons.
Colloquium
In the Master's degree programme, a concluding colloquium must be held at the end of the thesis. The concluding colloquium should be held as soon as possible, at the latest four weeks after notification that the thesis has been passed.
Students must register themselves (programme-specific form from the examination office) on a date agreed with the supervisor.
Assessment
As a rule, the Bachelor's thesis must be assessed by one assessor within six weeks of submission; the Master's thesis must be assessed by two assessors within ten weeks of submission.
